Kid Knocks On Front Door With Whip, Father In Custody
A Kaufman County family is speaking out after a neighborhood confrontation turned unexpectedly tense, leaving them shaken and calling for accountability. What began as a disagreement among children led to a chain of events involving property damage, a heated exchange between adults, and a law enforcement response.
Carissa Nash was at home with her family when she was startled by an unusual sound outside. She checked her doorbell camera and was shocked to see a neighborhood boy aggressively knocking on their front door and appearing to strike it with a long object resembling a whip.
“It was terrifying,” Carissa recalled. “We weren’t expecting anything like that, especially from a child.”
In the footage, Carissa can be heard opening the door and firmly telling the boy to leave the property. Her voice was calm but stern, warning that police would be contacted if the behavior continued. The boy turned around and walked away without further confrontation.
According to the Nash family, the incident originated after school earlier that day. Their daughter and the boy, along with a group of other neighborhood kids, were walking home when a minor disagreement took place. Dezerrea Nash explained that her daughter had been struck with a skateboard by the boy and pushed back in response. At some point, another child reportedly pushed the boy into a puddle of water.
“When he got up, the first person he saw was our daughter, so he assumed she was responsible,” Dezerrea said. “But it was a group situation that got out of hand—not something she did alone.”
Later that day, the family noticed a large scratch on their vehicle that appeared to match the trajectory of the object seen in the doorbell footage. “It’s not a small mark you can buff out—it’s deep,” Dezerrea added. “We believe it may have been caused by the same item he had in his hand.”
In an effort to address the situation peacefully, Dezerrea decided to speak with the boy’s father, identified as Bryan Brunson. However, he says the conversation quickly went south.
Law enforcement was called to the scene, and officials confirmed that Brunson was arrested and charged with reckless conduct in connection with the incident. He was later released on bond. Police have since increased patrols in the neighborhood to help restore a sense of safety for all families involved.
“I went over to show him the video and explain what had happened,” Dezerrea said. “But as soon as he opened the door, I noticed he seemed defensive and unwilling to talk.”
According to Dezerrea, Brunson appeared to be holding something behind his back and stood in the doorway in a way that made the Nash family feel uneasy. The situation escalated, and during the exchange, a loud sound startled everyone. including Brunson’s own child, who was reportedly standing nearby. Brunson’s gun misfired into the ground while in his pocket.
Despite the events that unfolded, the Nash family says they aren’t seeking retribution—they simply want accountability and a resolution that prevents future problems.
“This isn’t about anger or revenge,” Carissa said. “We just want our community to feel safe again, and for people to take responsibility when things go too far.”
The incident has sparked broader conversations around community trust, conflict resolution, and the importance of setting an example for children when it comes to handling disagreements with respect and care.
“This stems from a bullying issue between the girl and the boy with the whip,” said Jason Johnson, Kaufman County’s Precinct 2 constable. “There’s been several interactions between the two of them at different times and different locations.”
